TL;DR

  • A-dec is the brand dentists and service technicians most often name for longevity, with chairs still running after 25 to 40 years.
  • Takara Belmont is the most common value recommendation, often described as reliable and roughly half the price of A-dec.
  • DCI Edge is praised as easy and cheap to repair, but owners report trim plastics and control pads cracking early.
  • Midmark, Planmeca and Flight Dental all have loyal owners, while Dentsply Sirona draws the most mixed reliability reports.
  • Long-term parts availability and a good local technician matter more than the badge on the chair.

Last updated October 19, 2026. Based on manufacturer specifications and dozens of first-hand reports from dentists and service technicians on r/Dentistry. We do not sell dental chairs and earn nothing from any brand on this page.

The dental chair brands dentists recommend most are A-dec for longevity, Takara Belmont for value, and DCI Edge for low-cost repairs.

Midmark, Planmeca and Flight Dental also have strong followings, and the right choice depends on your budget, your local dealer and how long the brand will keep supplying parts.

This guide compares the major brands using manufacturer specs and the experiences dentists and equipment technicians share in public discussions.

These are individual reports rather than controlled reliability data, so we note where opinions conflict.

A-dec

A-dec was founded in 1964 by Ken and Joan Austin and has been based in Newberg, Oregon, since 1965.

It is the brand dentists on r/Dentistry name most often, and several report A-dec chairs from the 1980s and 1990s still working after only reupholstering.

Service technicians give the same reasons: A-dec makes nearly every part of its chairs itself, and parts remain available for chairs 40 years old.

The criticisms are price and, for some recent buyers, reliability.

A few dentists who bought A-dec chairs between 2019 and 2023 reported repeated breakdowns and slow support, which one technician linked to industry-wide quality-control problems in that period.

Within the range, dentists describe a noticeable step up from the A-dec 400 to the A-dec 500, which is also rated for heavier patients at 500 lb.

Takara Belmont

Takara Belmont is the Japanese brand dentists most often suggest when A-dec is out of budget.

Owners describe chairs running 11 to 25 years with few or no repairs, and one called Belmont “the Toyota of dental chairs,” adding that they are not flashy but good and last.

Belmont’s current US chairs use a standard electrohydraulic system with soft start and stop, and its US spec sheet rates the Q5000 and Q3000 at 440 lb.

One practice buying eight operatories found Belmont packages about $34,000 cheaper than A-dec, roughly $4,000 per room.

Some owners feel Belmont delivery units and lights are less solid than A-dec’s, even when the chairs themselves hold up well.

DCI Edge

DCI is also based in Newberg, Oregon, and service technicians note that DCI made many parts for Pelton & Crane, once an industry leader.

Technicians like DCI because parts are cheap, widely available and easy to fit, and many say “repair guys love DCI.”

The common complaint is build quality on non-structural parts.

Several owners report cracking plastics, failing control button pads and cracked trap housings, especially on the DCI Edge Series 5.

DCI chairs are a popular new and used option, with dentists reporting new Series 5 chairs at around $13,000 to $14,000 without a light.

Midmark

Midmark chairs get consistently warm reviews for patient comfort, and one dentist reported Midmark chairs still going strong after more than 15 years.

Another noted that their Midmark chairs could be repaired with DCI replacement parts, which keeps costs down.

One practice reported that Midmark chairs bought during and after the COVID period needed several technician return visits to fix factory issues, while their older Midmark units ran for years without problems.

Planmeca and KaVo

Planmeca, a Finnish company, acquired KaVo’s treatment unit business in 2022, so the two brands now sit under one group.

One dentist reported five Planmeca chairs still working after 20 years with two reupholsterings.

KaVo has a premium reputation, but one dentist described early-2000s KaVo chairs that could no longer get a replacement control panel after eight years, forcing a manual-switch workaround.

That is the main risk with electronics-heavy chairs: they are only as repairable as the parts supply behind them.

Dentsply Sirona

Dentsply Sirona chairs are praised for modern design, and one dentist reported a Sirona chair still looking modern and working well after more than 20 years.

However, Sirona draws the most negative reliability reports in dentist discussions.

Complaints include cuspidors leaking onto the floor, touch-sensitive buttons that activate while staff wipe them, repeated small part failures, and, in one case, a chair scrapped because its CPU board could not be replaced.

Several dentists also reported frustration with service scheduling.

If you consider Sirona, ask your dealer directly about local technician coverage and parts support for at least 10 to 15 years.

Flight Dental and Other Value Brands

Flight Dental is a frequent value recommendation, with one dentist using Flight chairs for 15 years and another reporting that Flight replaced a failed part free of charge after the warranty had expired.

Dentists have quoted new Flight A12 packages at around $11,000.

Other names that come up include Beaverstate Dental, an Oregon brand known for long component warranties, ADS, whose hydraulic chairs one technician recommended for practices with many heavier patients, and DentalEZ (Forest), whose older chairs owners call “tanks.”

Korean brand Osstem is also growing quickly in search interest, but there are still few long-term ownership reports from US dentists.

How to Choose a Dental Chair Brand

  • Ask how long parts will be supported. Technicians repeatedly say to buy the chair that will still have parts in 15 years.
  • Check your local technician’s preferences. A brand your technician knows and stocks parts for will cost less to keep running.
  • Match the weight rating to your patients. Ratings range from about 298 lb to 600 lb across brands and models.
  • Consider refurbished premium chairs. Many dentists recommend reupholstered older A-dec chairs, which they report buying for about $1,500 to $3,000.
  • Get several dealer quotes. Belmont and others are sold through multiple dealers, which dentists say leads to better pricing.
  • Do not forget the operator’s seat. Several dentists recommend skipping the matching brand stools and buying a well-fitted saddle stool instead, at a fraction of the price, and our best saddle stools for dental hygienists list covers the options.

How We Researched This Comparison

We read more than a dozen chair-buying threads on r/Dentistry between 2022 and 2026, giving extra weight to answers from people who identified as equipment service technicians.

We combined those reports with manufacturer specifications, including Takara Belmont’s US spec sheet and A-dec’s company history.

We have no relationship with any chair manufacturer or dealer, and there are no affiliate links on this page.

DCI chairs are well liked by technicians because parts are cheap and easy to fit, and owners say the core hydraulics hold up. The most common complaints are cracking plastic trim, control pads and trap housings.

Which dental chair brands are the most reliable?

Based on dentist and technician reports, A-dec, Takara Belmont and Midmark have the strongest long-term reliability reputations, and Planmeca owners also report long service lives. Dentsply Sirona draws the most mixed reliability reports.

Who makes A-dec dental chairs?

A-dec makes its own chairs and almost all of their parts at its headquarters in Newberg, Oregon, where the company has been based since 1965.

Should I buy a new or refurbished dental chair?

Many dentists recommend a refurbished, reupholstered premium chair, such as an older A-dec, over a new budget chair. Check that parts are still supported and that the chair keeps its electrical safety certification.
